ISMCO is Dedicated to the Advancement of Cancer Research

In Loving Memory of
Nektaria “Aria” Kalykaki-Bebis

Congratulations to Noemi Andor and colleagues from the Moffitt Cancer Center for receiving the 2019 Best Paper Award!

ISMCO’19 was a truly rewarding experience!

Welcome to ISMCO

Cancer is not a single disease, it is a complex and heterogeneous disease which leads to the second cause of death worldwide. Although all cancers manifest themselves as an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, they are actually distinct neoplastic diseases that possess different genetic and epigenetic alterations, underlying molecular mechanisms, histopathologies and clinical outcomes. Despite significant advances in the understanding of the principal mechanisms leading to various cancer types, less progress has been made toward developing patient-specific treatments.  Advanced mathematical and computational models could play a significant role in examining the most effective patient-specific therapies.

The purpose of the International Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Oncology (ISMCO) is to provide a common interdisciplinary forum for mathematicians, scientists, engineers and clinical oncologists throughout the world to present and discuss their latest research findings, ideas, developments and applications in mathematical and computational oncology.  In particular, ISMCO aspires to enable the forging of stronger relationships among mathematics and physical sciences, computer science, data science, engineering and oncology with the goal of developing new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of malignancies.

The symposium will consist of invited and contributed presentations dealing with all aspects of mathematical and computational oncology. There will also be several keynote presentations, tutorials, special tracks, and panel discussions.

Submission and Review Process

ISMCO encourages three types of submissions for the main symposium and special tracks: (1st type) abstracts (1-2 pages), short papers (4-6 pages), or  full papers (10-12 pages) of original and previously unpublished research, (2nd type) short papers (4-6 pages) of original but recently published research in a journal (not in another conference) and (3rd type) short papers (4-6 pages) describing work-in-progress, demos, experimental studies, open-source developments, and visionary papers.

Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee (PC) using a “double-blind” review process to determine its appropriateness for acceptance and presentation (oral or poster) at ISMCO.

Publication

Although publication in the symposium proceedings is not required for submitting and presenting your work at ISMCO, authors whose submissions are accepted for oral or poster presentation will have the option to publish their work either in the abstract proceedings or short/full paper proceedings.

Authors who prefer not to publish a short or full paper, can submit an abstract (1-2 pages) to be published by Frontiers in a special, fully-indexed, volume (click here for last year’s abstract proceedings). Short papers (4-6 pages) and full papers (10-12 pages with the option of purchasing 2 extra pages for up to 14 pages) will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes (LN) series (to be confirmed; click here for last year’s paper proceedings). Information on abstracting and indexing of the LN series can be found here . Full papers will also be submitted for indexing to PubMed Central.

Journal Publication (Research Topic – Frontiers)

Upon completion of ISMCO, authors of selected abstracts and short/full papers presented at ISMCO will be invited to submit extended versions of their work for expedited review and possible journal publication in a special research topic on Advances in Mathematical and Computational Oncology in the Frontiers in Physiology (Computational Physiology and Medicine, Systems Biology), Frontiers in Genetics (Cancer Genetics, Systems Biology), Frontiers in Oncology (Cancer Genetics), Frontiers in Immunology, Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences (Biological Modeling and Simulation), Frontiers in Medicine (Precision Medicine), Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (Systems Biology), and Frontiers in Robotics and AI (Computational Intelligence).

Each author would have the opportunity to select which of the above journals/sections to submit their paper(s). All papers accepted for publication in Frontiers will receive a 10% – 20% discount (depending on total number of submissions) of publication fees and will appear in a dedicated webpage under the common mathematical and computational oncology research topic.

Best Paper Award

Springer will be sponsoring a “best paper award (to be confirmed). We are also investigating the possibility of having additional awards sponsored by industry.

Affiliations

ISMCO is affiliated with the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). ISMCO attendees are encouraged to become a member of ISCB and claim a 10% discount on registration fees.
